Grottos & Fins

Grottos & Fins Background

Caves can be dramatic and functional additions to aquarium aquascaping.  I always wanted to find an individual rock with a cave already carved into it for my cave dwellers.  I never found one that was really as dramatic as I had hoped.  So I decided to make one out of cement.

I chose a “mother” rock with a very interesting shape and molded an identical cement replica with one exception - I built a cave into it.  Then I decided to take it a step further – a series of caves built into a large rock.

Every single item I sell is hand-made.  There is no production line and there never will be.  There is just no getting around the time and effort it takes to make them right.  Which is exactly the way I want it.

Thanks for dropping by!

Testimonials

I received a package from Bart Purcell of Grottos and Fins and I opened it with both curiosity and trepidation. I didn’t know what to expect. I knew he was sending me a Grottos and Fins rock cave, and I had never seen one before.

On first glance, the rock cave looked quite natural and the opening seemed large enough for most small to medium sized fish. I placed the rock cave in my brackish-water tank that has mudskippers, Celebes Rainbowfish, and bumblebee gobies. In no time, one of the mudskippers claimed it as his “territory” and took up habitation on the top of it. The other mudskippers weren’t allowed anywhere near it, but the other fishes could come and go in/around it as they chose. The gobies particularly liked being in the vicinity of the rock cave. At this stage I was impressed by it and was looking forward to seeing how it would look in the future.

I was not prepared for what unfolded after 3-4 weeks in my aquarium.  If I thought the rock cave looked natural before, it looked a LOT more natural after it “settled in”. It looks perfectly natural and not man-made at all now. I would heartily recommend this product and I look forward with interest to the new designs and styles that Grottos and Fins designs in the future.

“I got a man made rock from Grottos & Fins. I could not believe how natural the rock looks. The cave that was built into the rock was perfect for any fish to hang out in and be comfortable and safe. I would highly recommend this product if you are looking for natural looking caves for your cichlids. It is easier than trying to build cave with natural rock and putty glues.
Thank you.”   (exinnix – Aquatic Hobbyist)
